Currently in place on the university campus, the Manchester Plinth is a hybrid digital-physical sculpture that interacts with phone cameras to reveal items from the University’s vast Special Collections for users to explore.
The experience has been supported and developed by Manchester School of Art students and staff alongside local technology companies, and was launched during this year’s Degree Show. Manchester School of Art students produced digital versions of artefacts for the plinth as well as digital games around the installation at All Saints Park.
This project is part of the MMU contribution Cityverve, that is exploring the future of SMART cities. Other MMU projects include harnessing technology to boost green travel, bring culture to life and tackle isolation among older people are well underway as part of our involvement in CityVerve.
